    The Short List:  A small province of the Andaman coast’s southernmost region of the kingdom bordering Malaysia with 80km of coastline.  It is 973km from the capital Bangkok covering 2,478 sq km.  It became a province of Thailand in 1925.  Most of the local residents are Muslim and about 60% of the locals speak Yawi or Malay as their first language.  The province is stunningly beautiful with unspoiled islands, forests, waterfalls, mountainous land, limestone caves, blinding white sand, and clear blue seas.

    Things Famous For:  Tarutao-Adang Fishing Tournament is held in March annually; Tarutao Festival is an annual event from November to April annually; International Kite Festival is held every February at Satun Airport; Floating Boat Festival is celebrate by fishermen living on Lipeh Island on the 13th-15th day of the waxing moon in May and October for 3 days and 3 nights to send away bad luck and bring good fortunes for the fishermen.  There are many interesting attractions and sites in each district in Satun province.

    Muang district is the location of Khao Toh Phaya Wang Park, Tam Ma Lang Pier, Ku Den Museum, Laem Than Yong Po and Had Sai Yao, Tham Lod Pu Ya, Wat Chanathipchaloem, and Satun Central Mosque (Masjid Mambang).  Khao Toh Phaya Wang Park is beautiful with picturesque small limestone hill with a cave and a brook and luscious with trees.  Tam Ma Lang Pier is the departure point for people who want to go to Langkawi Island in Malaysia.  Ku Den Museum is a nice looking old Sino-Portuguese mansion built in 1902.  It is located on Tanon Satun Thani across from the Satun Land Department Office and has on displayed antiques and artifacts and exhibitions of the local art and culture covering every aspect of southern Muslim life.  Laem Than Yong Po and Hat Sai Yao are on Ko Nok about 1 hour boat ride trip or by car to Tam Yong Po.  It is a fishing village at the estuary cape projection into the Andaman Sea.  It has powdery white sand beach fringed with a large area of coconut grove.  Tham Lod Pu Ya is located right on Malaysia border reachable by boat.  It is a pretty limestone cave dripping with stalactites.  Wat Chanathipchaloem on Tanon Sulakanukoon south of the center of town is a peaceful place of worship for Buddhists in Satun for more than 100 years.  Satun Central Mosque is on Tanon Buri Wanit and Tanon Satun Thani in the center of Satun.

    Khun Don District’s main attractions are Thaley Ban National Park, Namtok Ya Roi, Namtok Ton Pilo, and Bung Thaley Ban.  Thaley Ban National Park is 40km from town and covers the area of 196 sq km and has a large swamp area and the rest is mountainous and teeming with plants, birds, and wild animals.  The native amphibian is Khiat Wak which resembles a frog or toad but has a tail and yelps like a dog and can be seen during rainy season.  Bung Thaley Ban is surrounded by Chin and Wang Pra Mountains covering the area of 320 sq km and full of fish and shells.  Namtok Ton Pilo is a year-round falls with water originated from Chin Mountain.  Namtok Ya Roi is a nine-tier waterfall with swimming basin at each level.

    Khuan Kalong District’s attractions are Namtok Panan and Namtok Tan Sawan.  Namtok Panan has a year-round supply of water from Ka Ming Mountain.  Namtok Tan Sawan is a 5-tier waterfall surrounded by pleasant green forest.

    King-Amphoe Muang District’s main attractions are Jedkod cave, and Wang Tai Nam Waterfall.  Namtok Tai Nam is a 5-tier waterfall located in Thuegkao Buntad Wildlife Sanctuary.  Camping is allowed.  Jedkod cave is 500m long and curvy with a stream inside.

    La-ngu District’s main attractions are Tarutao National Park, Muko Phetra National Park, Ko Bulon Le, Ko Lidi Lek, Namtok Wang Sai Thong, and Satun Freshwater Fisheries Office.  Tarutao National Park is an archipelago of 51 islands off Satun’s coast.  Ko Tarutao, the largest with the area of 152 sq km, was once a political prison island, features waterfalls, streams, caved, protected wildlife, forests, and The Penitentiary Memorial.  The other islands are Ko Adang, Ko Rawai, Pha Chado, Ko Hin Ngam, Ko Li Pe, and Ko Kai.  The crystal clear sea is perfect to see the seven-color corals in shallow water. The islands have beautiful beaches suitable for swimming and snorkeling.  Ko Hin Ngam is tiny and is known for its unique black smooth and shiny pebbles.  The legend has it that the pebbles are cursed and anyone who takes the stone away from its site will meet with bad luck until the stone is returned back to the island.   Muko Phetra National Park comprises of a long coastline from Pak Nam district, La-ngu district, Khon Khlan district, Thung Wa district of Satun province and Sukon district and Pa Lian district of Trang Province covers both land and sea areas off-shore islands include Ko Phetra, Ko Khao Yai, Ko La Lo Ban Te, Ko Lidi, Ko Bu Loan, Ko Lao Liang, and Ko Perama totaling the area of 494.38 sq km.  Ko Bulon Le has beautiful white beaches of Mango Bay and its signature clear waters make for perfect diving and snorkeling with good coral reefs immediately off shore and the island is perfect for hiking with interlaced tracks and trails lined with rubber plantations teeming with birds.  Namtok Wang Sai Thong has a limestone basin that resembles a blooming lotus when water falls down to that tier.  Ko Lidi Lek is the site of the National Park Protection Unit and also has mangrove forests and various marine animals.  Satun Freshwater Fisheries Office is a nursery for the rare Kradan turtles that only can be found here in Thailand.  The best time of the year for Tarutao Park is from November to April.

    Tung Wa district’s attraction is Namtok Than Plio which is a 2-tier waterfall with the water originating from Lung Khroe Mountain in Trung and Satun provinces.  The lower level waterfall has a 40m wide by 50m long pool.
